"Protection Is The Key"

So if you know anything about natural hair you have heard of the phrase "protective styling". Here is my take on the topic. Does protective styling promote hair growth? DUH! Okay, so, if you leave your hair alone it will thank you. You will have less breakage, and split ends will be a thing of the past! O yea, it is true. If you do not believe me take a protective style challenge! Take pics of your hair now showing length and overall appearance. Then wear protective styles for about three months and see the difference. Okay, we know that protective styling is good, but it seems rather boring, right. Well, that is when creativity and HOTT hair accessories step in. Here are some photos of some of my protective styles starting from 3 months natural till now.

This was one of my first updos. I set my hair in braids and pinned up.

Twists at 4 months

Twists at 8 months

The start of a love for twist outs! Did i say LOVE!

Box Braids are an awesome protective style.

Buns! Buns! Buns! Once your hair is at a length where you can do buns, DO THEM! I'm just saying... Buns are the BEST protective style. They are quick and easy. I recommend doing them on stretched hair. So, use your old twist outs, braid outs, and blow outs to do buns! Here are some I have worn.

Twists on stretched hair

Medium twists pinned down. This is one of my favs, by the way. Quick and easy!

What have we learned today? Protection is the key! If your goal is to obtain new lengths I challenge you to start protecting your hair. How long? I would say at least the first 2 years of your natural journey. Why? Because you are setting the foundation for your hair. "A strong foundation increases strength!" (By Me) Today, I encourage you to start on your foundation, and know that you will have happy growing!

Being Natural pays off!

This was the beginning! Sept 8, 2007!

This is my first flat iron job on natural hair! I was excited, and knew there was noooo turning back!

Throughout my natural journey my love has become twist outs! It is protective, and it keeps your hair from becoming tangled. I lived by wash, twist, twist out routines for the first 3.5 years of my natural journey! I have to say it helped me accomplish the length that I have today.

After my third year I started trying new things. Here is a twist out stretched with a blow dryer. I have perfected this look now which you will see in the next pic.

SEEEeeee!!! (Natural 3 yrs 5 mos)

Here is my length to date! I have accomplished this with patients and love! Embrassing who you are is the key. Also, not letting others comments alter the goals you have for yourself. This is true with any goal that you have in life!

Stay in touch for routines and products!!! See ya sooooon...

TWISTS AND TWIST OUTS

During this winter season I have been wearing A LOT of Twists! Here is what they typically look like. I love wearing twist because I do not have to worry about doing my hair in the mornings.

Even though I love my twist I usually can only leave then in for about 2-3 weeks. (Because I start missing my hair or want something different!) SO... I have been alternating between twists and twists outs. Here is what my twist out looks like... My twist were down on dry hair so that I would get some length on my twists. During twisting add some form of moisture. This could be coconut oil, shea butter, or a mixture to obtain the best twist out definition. There is always the option to do it dry and then run product through hair as well. Just make sure that hair is completely dry when you begin to undo your twists! This will help maintain frizz!
